Pangaea leaves Cape Town

By MH @ 09:57 [ Pangaea Expedition ]

Pangaea in Cape Town1 Pangaea in Cape Town2 Pangaea in Cape Town3

After a very busy but pleasant stop in South Africa, Mike Horn and his crew pull up anchor, wave goodbye to family and friends, and begin the crossing of the Indian Ocean, towards their next destination, New Zealand.

For three weeks, Pangaea was moored in the Victoria and Alfred Harbour in the heart of Cape Town's waterfront, where she attracted a lot of interest from local residents, passing tourists and press.

Mike Horn was thrilled to have the opportunity to stop over at his South African homeland, to see his family and to present Pangaea and the Pangaea Expedition to his fellow compatriots.

The 14th of March represented a special day for Mike Horn and his team members. The first Pangaea Satellite project, initiated by two South African Pangaea Young Explorers Carlien Wolmarans and Cobus de Ridder, took place in Johannesburg. The project "Building a park in Protea Glen, Soweto", supported by Mike Horn team member, Caroline Rupert, was done with the help of local high schools and in co-operation with the Johannesburg City Parks.

Carlien and Cobus said : "Our aim is two-fold: through the construction of a green area, we not only hope to raise awareness amongst the community but also amongst the participants in the creation of the park. We believe in the importance of young people making a stand and difference in our community today. Our target group would be the future of tomorrow: young adults in their teenage years like us (primarily between 16 and 18 years-old). Youth leading the way, making a change - by us for everyone".

Meanwhile, eight Young Explorers are now preparing to meet Mike Horn and Pangaea in the fjords of the South Island of New Zealand in the middle of May. Amongst the astounding beauty of these ice cut fjords, our young explorers will witness the natural beauty of this unspoilt, untouched terrain, the importance of it's preservation and the protection of its widelife.

YEP 2 IN NEW ZEALAND

EXPLORE - Wild and unspoilt native bushlands and forest of the southern ice cut fjords.

LEARN - Scientific analysis of the water, the study of the local marine biodiversity (specifically the bottlenose dolphin) and the discovery of local cultures and traditions.

ACT - Establishing a sanctuary on Coal Island for the protection of endangered species.

Mike Horn is excited to explore and discover New Zealand with the second group of young explorers."I've heard many wonderful things about this country with its culture and traditions so different to those I have ever witnessed before. Through YEP we will sensitise the youths towards the appreciation of the 'unspoilt natural beauty' that beholds us in the Fiordlands - these words so rarely mentionned in todays world".

Pangaea Expedition - Mike Horn's latest adventure

By MH @ 08:48 [ Default ]

Mike Horn is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest modern day explorers.  His amazing journeys have brought him world renown and made him a spokesman, who is respected and listened to by young people, who are the future of our planet.

Many years ago Mike Horn decided that he would dedicate his life to exploring the natural world and then share his knowledge with young people, but to do this, he first of all needed the experience.

Mike began this journey by setting challenges for himself - swimming the rivers, sailing the oceans, surviving alone in  different environments and in extreme  weather conditions, confronting all elements of nature and continually pushing himself to his physical and mental limits. Today having accomplished his personal exploration goals, Mike feels its is his duty to share his immense experience and passion for nature. Not to become a name in the history books, but to create awareness and educate today’s youth; so that future generations can be motivated, educated, and inspired to actively find solutions to help the environment and the world in which we live.

Mike Horn calls his dream the 'Pangaea Expedition'. With the help of caring supporters, Mike has been able to build a boat, Pangaea, which will be used as a platform from which young adults can experience and explore the natural world, learn about the challenges we face and the possible solutions, and most importantly act to change things for the better. This dream has taken Mike Horn years to realize, but it is now becoming a reality from which Mike can do his part to instill his passion and wonderment for the natural world in today’s youth.

Back home again!

By MH @ 19:28 [ Last Degree ]
Late Sunday evening on the 22nd of April, Mike, Cathy and the girls finally arrived back at Geneva airport.

"The North Pole was a wonderful experience! Never before have we been in such wild conditions and felt so vulnerable amongst the nature. Skiing over the Arctic ice shelf, crossing over cracks in the ice and areas of open water, seeing the most spectacular scenery with polar bear tracks everywhere, gives other emotions and sensations that are difficult to write down on paper. Emotions were running high in our small family unit. We shared a very special moment in each others company and these moments come few and far between in normal life situations.

Seeing the difficulty that others had on the ice helps us to understand the expertise and knowledge that is necessary if somebody wants to explore the polar regions. We certainly have a huge respect for Mike, who ensured that we were safe, never too cold and gave us the feeling of security at all times. We could not have had a better guide!

Thank you for all the support from the readers of our blog and our team back at the office who kept things rolling during our absense.

We'll be lying low for the next few weeks, and hope to find some time to advance on Mike's next project and enjoy the beautiful spring weather here in Switzerland."

With kind regards from the family Horn,

Mike, Cathy, Annika and Jessica

Special thanks also to our partners for their continued support;
Eider, Julbo, Mercedes, Miauton, Officine Panerai, Petzl, Salomon, Swisscom Innovation

Special thanks to all those who supplied us with equipment, food and clothing;

The flags have been planted!

By MH @ 18:24 [ Last Degree ]

After being stuck in a storm on the North Pole since Friday night, Annika, Jessica, Cathy and Mike could finally plant their flags on the top of the world yesterday morning, the meteorological conditions improved during the Sunday to Night.

The three girls are New Zealanders, Mike is South African and they have been residing in Switzerland for many years, therefore they proudly planted the flags representing the 3 countries at the North Pole.

As soon as this symbolic act had been achieved the whole family had to pack up their camp and put all the equipment in the sledges as the Russian helicopters were about to arrive to pick them up to take them to Barneo base.

Mike already stayed there for a few days last year at the end of his expedition with Borge Ousland. He thus met a lot of friends, and in their company, Mike, Cathy and the girls celebrated the success of their expedition. Vodka for the parents, Coke and a video for the girls!!

The helicopters picked up numerous other people on expeditions on the polar ice yesterday. The Horn family is not alone in the Barneo tents and they are spending some time with Thomas Ulrich and Jean-Louis Etienne.

“The atmosphere is great and it is a pleasure to eat some good soup and to be able to stand up straight in the bigger tent at the base” they told us. “The landscape is beautiful but the Weather specialists are already announcing a new storm for the next few days. We may be stuck here for a few more days.”

And it has been confirmed, Mike, Cathy and the girls are stuck on the ice cap at Barneo Base for at least 2 more days and their return to Switzerland is postponed. The girls are learning about another aspect of their father’s expeditions, patience!

Annika, Jessie, Cathy and Mike will give you more news about their expedition and tell you more stories upon their arrival in Switzerland.

With kind regards from the Mike Horn team.

And here are the last pictures we received!
